Rick's MLB Plays 8/27

Tampa Bay Rays @ Boston Red Sox (4:10 ET)

Favorite: Rays -135

Total: 9

Pitchers: Jeffrey Springs (2.46 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) vs. Rich Hill (4.68 ERA, 1.31 WHIP)

As I type these words the Red Sox are currently blowing their 9-4 lead, allowing a three-run homer to Jose Siri to make it a one-run game. Whether they hold on tonight or not, the pitching matchup is drastically different on Saturday in comparison to Friday. Where the Red Sox had the advantage on Friday they will likely be chasing after five innings. Rich Hill shutout his former team in his one appearance against them this year, but has been horrid as of late. He's allowed 13 runs over his last 16.2 innings, not going more than five innings once. At 42 he's given the Red Sox all he has and I see the Rays picking up right where other teams let off.

Jeffrey Springs is quite the opposite to Hill - thirteen years younger and struggled in his only outing against the Red Sox but he's been brilliant in his four starts in August. He's allowed just 4 runs over 21.2 innings and is lookign to continue that trend against a good offense. Expect him and a healthy Rays offense to go into the later innings with a lead and so I'll take the Rays to do just that.

Atlanta Braves @ St Louis Cardinals (7:15 ET)

Favorite: Braves -115

Total: 7.5

Pitchers: Charlie Morton (3.99 ERA, 1.17 WHIP) vs. Jordan Montgomery (3.08 ERA, 1.01 WHIP)

I keep waiting for Charlie Morton's age to catch up to him much like it has Rich HIll but the 38-year-old veteran hasn't hung his curveball up much and is throwing his best ball of the season. He's improved his ERA each month and in August is absolutely dealing. Striking out 38 batters through 25.1 innings, allowing just a 2.49 ERA in the process, 'Uncle Charlie' is looking to keep that going against the hottest offense in baseball The Cardinals have the highest OPS of all teams by a wide margin in the month of August and are desperate to get back in the series after losing the first game.

While Charlie Morton has been good, Jordan Montgomery has been the best pitcher in baseball this month. He's allowed just 1 run over 25.2 innings in August and was just one hit away from a perfect game in his last outing against the Cubs. Much like how Morton is facing the best current offense in the Cardinals, Montgomery is facing one of the best and arguably the deepest in the Braves, who are currently 4th in OPS over the last two weeks. Something has to give in what should be a phenomenal matchup, but give me the Cardinals at home to avoid the series loss and take it to Sunday.

Pick: Cardinals ML -105 (1u)

New York Yankees @ Oakland A's (9:07 ET)

Favorite: Yankees -220

Total: 8

Pitchers: Domingo German (3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) vs. Adam Oller (6.41 ERA,1.69 WHIP)

The Yankees have Giancarlo back and he brought with him the hot bats. The Yankees are officially out of their slump having won 4 games in a row (Friday night game ongoing) and are facing one of the worst pitchers in baseball this year in Adam Oller. He hasn't allowed as many runs as of late but he's allowing more than enough hits and walks to be punished. With 23 hits and 12 walks over 21.2 innings in August, expect the Yankees' slugging-heavy lineup to take care of a guy who gets pieced up with consistency. In the bottom-half of innings will be German on the mound for the Yankees and while he had to gain his feet to begin the season off injury, he's in full swing now and looking to have yet another good performance against the horrid A's. Give me the Yankees on the runline early before this line gets out of hand.

Pick: Yankees -1.5 -120 (1u)
