Rick’s MLB Plays 7/24

9-3 +7.3u since All-Star Break

Toronto Blue Jays @ Boston Red Sox (1:35 ET)

Favorite: Blue Jays -145

Total: 11

Pitchers: Ross Stripling (3.03 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) vs. Brayan Bello (10.13 ERA, 2.38 WHIP)

This Red Sox team is banged up and broken. They didn’t allow double digit runs today which is improvement, but still lost handily 4-1. In addition to a number of pitchers being on the IL, the Sox have now added Rafael Devers to the list, while J.D. Martinez is day-to-day. Without both players tomorrow I doubt their offense picks up much against Ross Stripling who has been brilliant. In his 45 innings since the beginning of June, Stripling has a 2.00 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. His changeup is deadly, with batters hitting below the mendoza line on it at .188. Brayan Bello is the product of all of those pitching injuries, thrust into the big leagues well before he’s ready. He’s very clearly got the ‘stuff’ but needs to refine it. A 97mph fastball he struggles to locate is a clear sign of that. I doubt the explosive Blue Jays offense takes long to get to him, as it didn’t take long for the Rays to. I can’t believe how short this line is, and I’ll be confidently backing the Blue Jays to complete the sweep.

Miami Marlins @ Pittsburgh Pirates (1:35 ET)

Favorite: Marlins -180

Total: 7.5

Pitchers: Sandy Alcantara (1.76 ERA, 0.90 WHIP) vs. Mitch Keller (4.55 ERA, 1.46 WHIP)

Two of the worst offenses in baseball come to grips with the NL Cy Young favorite on the mound on Sunday afternoon, any guess where I’m going? Pittsburgh won Saturday’s affair 1-0, and that couldn’t be more fitting for these offenses given their performance recently. We’ve talked about just how dead the Marlins offense has been in the month of July (29th in OPS) but the Pirates isn’t much better. In fact, both teams are in the bottom 5 in OPS since the beginning of June! With Sandy on the mound and an ever improving Mitch Keller (4.10 ERA in June, 2.37 in July), I think we get another stupendous performance from Sandy in a low-scoring, sweaty battle in Pittsburgh.

Colorado Rockies @ Milwaukee Brewers (2:10 ET)

Favorite: Brewers -200

Total: 9

Pitchers: Chad Kuhl (4.11 ERA, 1.39 WHIP) vs. Eric Lauer (3.64 ERA, 1.16 WHIP)

Teams with inverse records come to terms after the Brewers took the first two games of the series. Chad Kuhl takes the mound for the Rockies having a horrific July posting a 7.36 ERA with a 1.91 WHIP and looks to rekindle the run of form he had in June including a 3 hit shutout agains the Dodgers. Given how consistently the Brewers struggle against lefties (25th in OPS) and how their offense can go dead at times, I think this is actually a great opportunity for him to bounce back. On the flip side, Eric Lauer has had a brilliant July (2.00 ERA) after a horrible June (6.83 ERA) and is looking to keep up the stretch he’s had in July. His opponents have been poor (Cubs, Pirates, Giants) and with the Rockies being the best team in the league against lefties (not a typo) expect the Rockies to get to Lauer early and often. I think Rockies are a live dog and will avoid the series loss at least for another day.

Pick: Rockies ML +170 (1u)
