Rick’s MLB Plays 5/25

Los Angeles Dodgers @ Washington Nationals

Favorite: Dodgers -210

Total: 8.5

Pitchers: Julio Urias (2.63 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) vs. Erick Fedde (4.08 ERA, 1.46 WHIP)

We covered the first game of this series on Monday’s article, so I won’t get into each team’s historical batting and how much superior the Dodgers have been. Winners of now the first two in the series by an aggregate 19-5, the Dodgers are on a tear winning 9 of their last 10 now. They are given quite the opportunity to sweep the series today with Julio Urias on the mound performing as well as ever. With outstanding numbers all season and the balls looking like beach balls in the eyes of the hitters, the Dodgers have everything going for them and I expect that to lead into another run line victory against a decent starter in Erick Fedde. I’m not going to get cute here, just going to play the chalk with Dodgers -1.5

Pick: Dodgers -1.5 -130 (1u)

Milwaukee Brewers @ San Diego Padres

Favorite: Padres -140

Total: 7

Pitchers: Aaron Ashby (3.49 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) vs. Yu Darvish (3.91 ERA, 1.13 WHIP)

The Brewers are enjoying their bats coming to life over the past month. We always know that their pitching staff is among the best in the league, but their offense has been prone to cold stretches. Luckily, they’re performing with the best in May, good for 5th in the league in OPS. Ashby’s stats don’t look astounding, but he ranks among the top of the league in all expected categories, as well as strikeout, walk, and hard hit percentages.

Yu Darvish is coming off another great performance, throwing 7 shutout innings against the Phillies. He’s had another solid year, and will need to continue his quality today to give his faltering bats a chance against the Brewers. The Padres have been horrible offensively, though their record doesn’t indicate it. 27th in OPS over the month of May, they’re struggling to bring runs in and I don’t see that changing much against Ashby today.

Pick: Brewers F5 +0.5 -130 (1u) & Brewers F5 ML +115 (1u)

Cleveland Guardians @ Houston Astros

Favorite: Astros -185

Total: 8.5

Pitchers: Cal Quantrill (3.48 ERA, 1.19 WHIP) vs. Christian Javier (2.87 ERA, 1.02 WHIP)

The Cleveland Guardians have had a roller coaster of a season so far, with streaks of victories and defeats. They are currently on a downturn, winning only 3 of their last 10, with their bats landing at 22nd in OPS over the month of May. Cal Quantrill looks to get back to last season’s form, where he posted a 2.89 ERA. Unfortunately for him, the Astros have been one of the hottest teams in baseball, top 5 in all offensive metrics this month. Their pitching behind Javier, Verlander, and others has been outstanding too, and with the way Javier is playing, it might be tough for Cleveland to get enough runs to help Quantrill. With that said, I think the Astros are too large of favorites, and there is value to be had on the Guardians.

Pick: Guardians F5 +1 -130 (1u)
