Richmond at Charleston, 7pm ET
The Spiders and Cougars come into this Monday night bout feeling good about themselves early on in the season. Richmond lost plenty of firepower off the NCAA tournament team from last year but do return All Atlantic 10 first teamer Tyler Burton and have added some key contributors via the transfer portal. For Charleston, it is much of the same. Head Coach Pat Kelsey added several transfers from the D1, D2 and NAIA levels to patch up their roster.
Coach Chris Mooney had his hands full coming into the offseason trying to replace the likes of All Conference players such as Grant Golden and Jacob Gilyard. The emergences of redshirt guard Jason Nelson and transfers, Jason Roche and Neal Quinn, have been a boon early on in the campaign. The Spiders have owned the paint so far, ranking 12th in the nation in FG % inside in the arc. College of Charleston has had problems down low this year and in the past under Coach Pat Kelsey and that should bear itself out a good bit tonight as they've allowed the 4th highest 2pt % in the nation so far. Charleston already played a similar team in Chattanooga who ran the same Princeton Style offense as Richmond and only yielded middling results on defense. According to ShotQuality, Richmond's ability to get to the line and spacing should bother Charleston quite a bit as well.
For me, the number feels quite a bit off. Richmond should probably be favored in this matchup despite playing away from home with the matchup problems for Charleston. I'll take Richmond +2.
